Low levels of E. coli detected in on-site water system at Chalk River Laboratories

The following information bulletin is in accordance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ (CNL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories site.

Chalk River, ON – June 20, 2024 – Routine testing of the water system that supplies buildings at the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site has identified the presence of E. coli. While this water is not used for human consumption, as drinking water is provided via bottled dispenser stations, CNL has implemented water restrictions in certain buildings while it investigates the cause.

CNL has increased testing of the affected water system and is in contact with the Renfrew County District Health Unit for guidance to further understand the issue.

Though E.coli concentrations are relatively low, out of an abundance of caution CNL has also asked employees to take certain precautions while working on site until these water quality issues are resolved.

This issue is not related to radiological contamination and has no impact on the public or the environment.
