Chalk River, ON, May 28, 2018 – Today, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and the Town of Deep River signed a Fire Protection Services Agreement that will see CNL’s Chalk River Laboratories Fire Operations provide services to the Town to enable a significantly enhanced level of fire prevention, education and suppression services to the Town’s residents, businesses and visitors.
Under this new agreement, which is effective June 1, 2018, CNL Fire Operations will provide a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, a Fire Prevention Officer, CNL Officer Firefighters, and CNL Firefighters to the Town to an annual maximum of 14,000 personnel hours. This agreement supports a return to 24/7 on-duty coverage in the Deep River fire hall. The costs for CNL fire services will be borne by the Town of Deep River.
Of significance, this agreement will see the Town move immediately to recruit volunteer firefighters to bolster personnel from CNL and Deep River to provide the necessary resources to meet today’s standards for fire suppression services, with access to CNL Fire Operations training programs and facilities.
“The overwhelming priority of this Council has always been to ensure the safety of residents, employees and businesses in Deep River. This agreement with CNL provides an effective and efficient fire prevention, education and suppression service, addressing decades-old challenges at a cost within the current budget,” said Deep River Mayor, Joan Lougheed. “I would like to thank CNL President and CEO Mark Lesinski and the CNL team for making this possible.”
“CNL is pleased to work with the Town of Deep River on fire protection. Health and safety is our top priority, as it is for Deep River, which is evident in its efforts to provide enhanced fire services for its residents and businesses,” said CNL President and CEO Mark Lesinski.
“CNL Fire Operations capabilities and experience has already made an impression in the Town during the time of the interim agreement,” said Reeve Glenn Doncaster. “Their level of training and professionalism will continue to be of significant benefit to the Town as we move forward to recruit volunteer firefighters along with existing firefighters, to establish a fully functional composite fire department in Deep River.”
Mayor Lougheed and Reeve Doncaster were united in their praise and gratitude to the men and women of the Town of Laurentian Hills Fire Department for their unwavering commitment to assist the Town of Deep River in times of need over the past number of decades and look forward to an even stronger relationship in the years ahead.
